Voodoo Priestess Visits Malta

Saturday, July 17th, 2010

Naomie Harris visited Malta recently, and wrote this account of her trip for the Daily Mail in the UK:

It was the ultimate girlie weekend – three days of spa heaven, with best friends Anna and Georgina, spent in an unbelievably beautiful place. I met Anna in rather bizarre circumstances seven years ago when I first went to Hollywood to film Pirates Of The Caribbean, in which I played voodoo priestess Tia Dalma.

I was dropped off at The Plaza, a fabulous apartment block close to Sunset Boulevard where all the British actors stay when they come to Hollywood. Usually when you arrive for a filming job there’s someone to welcome you, show you around and explain how things work, but because I’d arrived so late there was nobody. Nor did I have any food and since I was filming the next morning I thought I ought to go out to get some.

So there I was, wandering the streets of Los Angeles in the dead of night looking to buy a pint of milk and a loaf of bread. I later discovered-that in LA people don’t go out walking, particularly after dark but, amazingly, I bumped into another crazy person. It was Anna Leigh.

I asked her if she knew where I could buy food in the area, but instead of directing me to the nearest grocery store she invited me to join her at a restaurant where she was going to eat with a friend. It turned out that Anna was a development producer staying in the same apartment block. We became firm friends and have remained so ever since – she came to Florida to stay with me, for example, when I was filming there.

It was Anna who organised our mini-break to Malta with her best friend Georgina Miles who I’d met at Anna’s wedding last year – it’s all a bit Sex And The City, isn’t it?

The purpose of the Malta trip was to celebrate Georgina’s engagement. Anna chose Malta because she had been holidaying on the island since she was a child – always returning to the Fortina Spa Resort (her father still stays there regularly). She loves the place so much she wanted Georgina and me to experience it for ourselves. So she went off and organised the whole trip.

I’d never been to Malta before but I’d heard a lot about it, particularly from fellow actors as a number of movies – Gladiator, Troy and Clash Of The Titans, for example – have been shot there in recent years. Certainly I can see why movie-makers use the place so much. In many places it has the look of a film set – you feel as if you are stepping back in time.

I was also surprised by how much remains of the British rule; you’ll see the classic red telephone and post boxes along with British shops such as Marks & Spencer, BHS and Next.

The Maltese are proud of their British heritage. It was nice to be in a place where people openly love the British so much. The islanders are incredibly welcoming, really very nice people.

Malta is a place where you always feel totally safe walking around. As three girls on our own we never felt threatened in any way. It’s a place which really comes alive after dark – at midnight everyone is ready to go clubbing. And, in the Mediterranean way, people love dressing up to promenade around town in the evening. I love that. At the Fortina I was lucky enough to stay in one of the top spa rooms. I’ve never seen a hotel room like it. It was mind-blowing, full of all sorts of spa equipment.

What I don’t normally like about spas is all the rigmarole you get at the reception, all the awkward chitchat and the endless hanging around to fill in forms. We had none of that – we had our own spa right there in my bedroom. You’ve heard of do-it-yourself? This was S-I-Y – spa-it-yourself.

My favourite piece of spa equipment was what I called ‘The Pod’. It was a piece of science-fiction-style technology that looked as if it had come straight from the movie Barbarella. You covered yourself in a clay-like gel, got into the The Pod with your head sticking out of the top, where it was fanned by cooling breezes while your body steamed inside the machine. Then the whole thing started vibrating. It sounds bizarre but was actually incredibly relaxing.

I also sampled one of the hotel’s new spa rooms at the top of the hotel which had lots of modern touches: a magnetic bed, a Power Plate machine and an air purification system.

We girls just loved it. We whiled away wonderful hours in my bedroom spa: someone would be in The Pod, someone else would be in my shower, which turned into a steam room and a third person would be relaxing in one of the two Jacuzzis. Utter bliss.

The Fortina is really into the whole health and beauty thing; it even has its own dental surgery and plastic surgery departments.

We didn’t need to leave the hotel to eat since it offered no fewer than eight restaurants (each part of our all-inclusive package) serving a different style of cuisine: Mediterranean, Indian, Thai, Chinese. Georgina loves sushi so had to have her daily fix every lunchtime and we joined her.

Most of our time was spent either eating or relaxing in the spas so I’m afraid sightseeing took a bit of a back seat.

However, we did visit the old walled city of Mdina in the centre of Malta. If, like us, you’re only on the island for a few days then this is the must-see place to visit  -  wonderful historic buildings and quiet cobbled streets circled by ancient walls from which you can enjoy fabulous views of the whole island. Come here at night when they light the streets with lanterns and people wander around dressed in costumes At the end of three days we felt refreshed and renewed and agreed that we will definitely return. Malta Property Prices Fall In 2009

Monday, August 31st, 2009

Property prices in Malta have slumped this year – but who says so?

None other than Malta’s Central Bank. This is what they have to say:

Property prices in Malta are continuing to fall with both apartments and houses seeing lower asking prices.

The Quarterly Review shows that the Mediterranean island’s year long real estate slowdown accelerated in the first three months of this year. The index dropped 9.9% on a year earlier with almost half of this fall, some 4.4%, occurring in the first quarter. At the end of March it was around 11% below the peak level s reached in the middle of 2007.

The bank said lower asking prices were observed in seven of the eight property categories surveyed by its property price index which is based on advertised residential property prices in newspapers sampled each month.

Apartments in shell form and houses of character saw the steepest decline with prices plummeting by 20.4% and 16.2% respectively.

Finished flats, the most popular property for sale in Malta saw prices fall 10.8% while townhouse dropped 11.8%, maisonettes in shell form were down 5% and maisonettes in finished form fell 4.4%.

Malta Press Reviews May 2009

Saturday, May 9th, 2009

We’ve noticed some press reviews and articles about Malta recently, and here are some extracts with links to the original sources if you would like to read the whole story:

From everestnews.com

Most believe only two European countries have not planted their flags on Mt. Everest’s summit, but if three Maltese men have their way that number will soon be down to one. If they are successful, the three will be the first people from Malta to summit the tallest mountain in the world. This would leave Cyprus as the only European country to have never been represented at the top of Everest. The men, Marco Cremona, Greg Attard and Robert Gatt just began their year of serious training for the dangerous attempt. They named their expedition Challenge8000, referring to the “death zone” which begins 8000 meters above sea level where oxygen levels are so low life cannot be sustained for long.

From maltatoday.com

Malta is among those countries in serious trouble with a 9% price fall, and is joined in this category by Iceland (16%), Ireland (12%), Ukraine (12%), Portugal (8%), France (8%) Finland (7%), Norway (6%) and Spain (6%).

Globalpropertyguide’s verdict is that after a crash housing markets take years to reach full recovery and that no real recovery is likely in the global housing markets this year. With the IMF predicting that the world economy will grow by 0.5% in 2009 (the lowest level in 60 years), and banks not becoming more willing to lend, the road ahead is tough.

Slowdown

Back in 2007, banks were already foreseeing a plateau in house prices after nearly four years of sharp rises in construction activity and prices.

But in the first quarters of 2008, the house price index fell by 0.8% – and when adjusted for inflation, by almost 5%. It was a nasty hit, considering that in 2004 the house price index had appreciated by 17% in real terms.

Malta Hotels Reach For The Stars In 2009

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008
St pau;s Bay in Malta from http://www.yourmalta.com

St pau;s Bay in Malta from http://www.yourmalta.com

Creating a new image for a holiday resort – or in Malta’s case a holiday island – as top end, upmarket and the place where the wealthy need to be can have very real financial benefits for a destination where tourism plays an important part in the economy.

Sliema, one of the main towns in Malta, is already a well known destination for spa holidays, with worldwide media often reporting of celebrities staying at the hotels, while travel writers often feature the town in travel features.

Not to be outdone another Malta hotel in Qawra, towards the north of the island, has just spent over a million Euros to refurbish its facilities.

Qawra is close to St Paul’s Bay, Bugibba and Mellieha – all popular tourist destinations.

St. Paul’s Bay is the ideal holiday area for tourists who like some variety. Whether they want to take a meandering stroll around the harbour and look at the Mediterranean, to indulge in a coffee and something sweet, or simply to relax and take in some rays, St. Paul’s Bay is a good Malta holidays area and has a range of hotels.

For eating out, St. Paul’s Bay has a good choice of restaurants. The area is well appointed by many tourist-friendly cafes and restaurants. For a taste of more upscale dining there is Old St. Paul’s Bay, where there are generally upmarket eateries, and all around the bay there are many good fish restaurants that serve up some of the best fish that Malta has to offer. For a little window shopping, tourists can take a stroll around the many shops located in the old village.

For a taste of the more modern side of the St. Paul’s Bay region, looking at a Malta map, there is the seafront at Bugibba, the hub of nightlife in the area. Here, there are a selection of trendy boutiques and restaurants. When the sun sets, Malta can go down market as well as up market and there are karaoke bars in Bugibba, but there is also the casino and a cinema.

Malta is also very rich in history, with some artifacts pre-dating Egypt’s pyramids. Hotel guests staying in Malta will enjoy the variety of treasures and artefacts on display in Malta’s museums, as well as the normal tourist entertainment.

Many of Malta’s historic churches still stand and are used for worship today. The gardens and historic architecture on Malta and its sister islands, Gozo and Comino, are popular for day trips, and many of the Malta hotels are pick up points for companies who organise excursions.

But whatever the reason for choosing Malta for a holiday, the hotels are stepping up a star to make tourists want to come back for another visit or two.
